In 1189 York, a city fractured by simmering resentment and religious zeal, young Roni stands at the crossroads of boyhood and duty. Devoted to his studies under the eminent Rabbi Yomtov, but captivated by the wider world, Roni yearns for a life beyond his community's expectations. His perspective expands through forbidden books, secret friendships across the religious divide, and a growing devotion to Henni, the ward of Benedict, a prominent Jewish moneylender whom Roni idolizes.

But as Richard I ascends the throne, anti-Jewish fervor turns to violent unrest. When tragedy strikes in London, a dying Benedict exacts a promise from Roni: keep Henni safe, no matter the cost.

Indebted barons fan the flames of prejudice into a deadly siege at York Castle, and the Jewish community is backed into a horrifying choice – convert or die by the sword. Recalling martyrs of the past, Yomtov urges the captives to take their destiny into their own hands.

Torn between Yomtov’s rigid guidance, the memory of Benedict’s more temporal wisdom, and his vow to protect the girl he loves, Roni must forge his own path while confronting the annihilation of his community, his family, his beloved, and himself.

THE WAY TO WALK reimagines the York Massacre of 1190 - a tale of love, courage, and survival in a society poisoned by hatred. It is inspired by real events and brings to life the actual people known to have incited - and perished during - this historical tragedy. Eight centuries have passed, and the calamity visited upon York’s Jews goes largely unremembered. But as anti-Jewish bigotry, scapegoating and libel again emerge, its lessons grow in significance and urgency.
